“Farm Bowl with Orchard” (2022) by Syd Carpenter
On View presents images from noteworthy exhibitions
THE LEGACY OF BLACK FARMERS inspired a new series of ceramic sculptures by Syd Carpenter. The works are presented in “Earth Offerings: Honoring the Gardeners” at Rowan University Art Gallery. Carpenter has a passion for gardening that she picked up from her mother and grandmother. A decade ago, the Philadelphia artist took a road trip to Georgia, South Carolina, and the Gullah Island communities, visiting African American farms. Her Farm Bowls series reflects the experience, incorporating representations of the architectural and organic forms she observed. The works “act as a collage of experiences, paying tribute to African horticulture practices and their impact on the legacy of agriculture, farming, and gardening.” In addition to the bowls, Carpenter is showing a group of Mother Pin sculptures, and a Ramshackle Fence installation.
